They had literally met a few days/week earlier.
May 1942 he met Marietta while in a double date at the Playmore to go dancing. His date was Gertrude Levitch. The next morning he showed up at Marietta’s door and said that while they were dancing the night before he really wanted to kiss her.
He continued seeing her every day for the next three months.
He was working for Morris Baellow at Midwest Packing house at tge time. Marietta was working nearby at 8th and Broadway at Lerner Brothers.
He would take her home from work every day and after they’d eat dinner with their own families he would take her out on a date.
After three months of steady dating they went to their usual hangout, Winsteads on the Plaza where they had their grilled cheese and frosty malts. Aug 12, 1942 he proposed.
